August 18: Cross-Stitch 101

Learn to Cross Stitch w/ Scout & Skein!

 Cross Stitch is a simple and relaxing hand stitching technique you can learn with these beginning kits from DMC.  Take home a project to add some handmade decor to your home!

Owner of Scout & Skein Katie will walk you through the following fundamentals of Cross Stitch including: 

Foundation Skills

• Threading a needle and knotting thread
• Reading a cross-stitch chart/pattern
• Understanding fabric count (Aida cloth — 14, 16, 18 count)
• How to use an embroidery hoop

Basic Stitches

• Full cross stitch (the foundation)
• Half cross stitch
• Quarter and three-quarter cross stitch (for curves and detail)
• Backstitch (for outlines and text)

Thread Management

• Starting and ending thread without knots
• Managing thread tension
• Separating embroidery floss strands
• Carrying thread across the back

Pattern Reading

• Understanding color symbols on a chart
• Counting squares accurately
• Finding the center of your fabric
• Following a color key

Finishing Basics

• How to finish off thread ends cleanly
• Basic washing and pressing of finished work
• Simple framing options
