Collection: Sirdar

Sirdar is a distinguished British yarn manufacturer with a legacy spanning over 140 years. Founded in 1880 by brothers Tom and Henry Harrap in Ossett, West Yorkshire, the company initially operated under the name Harrap Brothers Ltd. In 1890, they relocated to Bective Mills in Alverthorpe, Wakefield, where the company remains to this day.

The name "Sirdar" was adopted under the leadership of Fred Harrap, Tom's son, inspired by the title given to Lord Kitchener as "Sirdar of the Egyptian Army," symbolizing leadership and strength.  In 1934, Sirdar expanded its offerings by producing its first knitting patterns, complementing its high-quality yarns.

Throughout its history, Sirdar has been at the forefront of the knitting industry, known for its innovative designs and commitment to quality. The company's in-house design department, established in 1934, has produced thousands of knitting patterns, ensuring that each design is both a pleasure to knit and stylish to wear.

In 2017, Sirdar became part of The DMC Group, joining other renowned brands like DMC and Wool and the Gang. Today, Sirdar continues to be a leader in the hand-knitting market, offering a wide range of yarns and patterns that cater to knitters and crocheters worldwide.
