A Year in Books in Vibrant Hues: Collaborating with @bookaroundfindout on a Book Snake

At Scout & Skein, we love stories—whether they’re told with words or in stitches. That’s why we’re so thrilled to announce an exciting collaboration with the wonderfully creative Hannah Lee of @bookaroundfindout. If you haven’t yet stumbled across Hannah’s inspiring Instagram account, she’s a book enthusiast who read over 100 books last year and found the most delightful way to commemorate her reading journey—by knitting a snake. Yes, a snake! And not just any snake—a vibrant, colorful one where each ring represents a genre she explored in 2024.

When Hannah approached us for a local yarn shop (LYS) partner to bring her 2025 reading snake to life, we couldn’t resist the idea. Together, we curated a gorgeous palette using Kelbourne Woolens Germantown Worsted, a yarn known for its timeless quality and bold colors. The result? A rainbow of yarns that will perfectly capture Hannah’s eclectic reading list while inspiring crafters to embark on their own creative journeys.

The Palette: A Snake of Stories

Hannah’s love for books and knitting collided beautifully with this project, and we’ve separated the palette into two curated selections to match our unique takes on genre representation:

Scout & Skein’s Selections:

Nonfiction: Goldenrod
Contemporary/Literary Fiction: Jade
Classics: Oxford Blue
Sci-Fi: Peacock
Fantasy: Forest Green
Romantasy: Baby Pink
Crime/Suspense: Smoke Grey
Horror: Black
Memoir/Biography: Old Blue
Historical Fiction: Scarlet

Hannah Lee’s Selections:

Fantasy: Black
Romantasy: Pink
Sci-Fi: Honey
Fan Fiction: Rhododendron
Nonfiction: Old Blue
10K Words Written: Olive Green
Indie: Oxford Blue
Fiction: Jade

Each color tells its own story, just as each book does. Whether you’re a fan of pulse-pounding suspense or dreamy romantasy, there’s a color to match your vibe.

The Pattern Launch: Tomorrow on Ravelry!

Hannah has poured her creativity into designing the Book Snake Knitting Pattern, which launches tomorrow on Ravelry.com. This pattern is a beginner-friendly way to stitch your story into a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Whether you’re an avid reader like Hannah or just want a unique way to track your personal milestones, this project will charm you with its playful design and endless possibilities.

But we didn’t stop there! I’m currently collaborating with my friend and crochet expert, Rachael Goydan, to develop a crochet version of the pattern. Rachael’s deep yarn expertise and sharp design instincts have been invaluable in bringing this idea to life. Stay tuned for updates on the crochet pattern—it’s in the works and will open up this fun concept to a whole new group of makers.

Meet Hannah Lee (Instagram: @bookaroundfindout)

When Hannah first created and shared Leroy the Book Snake, she had no idea how many crafty humans would get excited about this quirky reading tracker.

The Book Snake pattern is her first, and it’s the direct result of fun, a dash of disbelief, two orders of celebratory sandwiches, and more than a few late nights spent neck-deep in a book, ignoring the clock on her nightstand. (If she didn’t look at it, she wouldn’t be tired the next day, right?)

The Book Snake represents the intersection of two of her favorite things—knitting and reading—and was created with the simplest goal in mind: fun. She encourages makers to drop-kick perfectionism, play with color, get lost in some good reads, and be as creative with this project as they’d like!

Why This Project Inspires Us

At its heart, the Book Snake is about celebrating stories in all forms: books, yarn, and the craft of making. It’s a reminder that creativity doesn’t have to live in just one medium. It can slither between the pages of a book, the loops of your knitting needles, or the stitches of a crochet hook. This collaboration is also a testament to the power of community. Hannah’s idea started as a personal project but has grown into something that invites all of us to share our stories through craft.

I’ve already read four books this month! Here’s my current list:

  • The Women by Kristin Hannah (Historical Fiction)
  • The Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli (Romantasy)
  • The Bear by Julia Phillips (Contemporary Fiction)
  • The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (Fantasy)

I’m already two books ahead of my 25-book goal for the year! You can follow my reading journey on Goodreads—username Katie Hoffman.

If you’ve been looking for a way to combine your love of reading and making, this project is the perfect opportunity. Grab your yarn, pick your genres, and let’s create something beautiful together.
